Trying to break diet soda habit

I have been addicted to diet soda for years. I know it is not good for you. I have rationalized with the thought that there are no calories so it is better than regular soda. For the record, I hate milk and it has always been hard to drink enough water.

As I get older, it is time to stop fooling myself and quite drinking 1-3 cans of diet soda a day (okay, sometimes more). I will replace it with water.

This is day three and I have a splitting headache. I know it is caffeine withdrawal. I am going to push through, I just hope the headache is gone by the time we leave for Las Vegas on Sunday.

  2. Good for you, it can be hard to change any habit. I can't handle the artificial sweetener in those drinks gives me a headache almost immediately must be an allergy. Keep it up

  3. I'm really glad to hear this, Darcie. Artificial sweeteners are addictive and have been linked to a number of health problems. If you want a safe non-caloric sweetener, you could try Stevia (available at Orchard and probably Trader Joe's). I'm not much of a water drinker myself but have been experimenting with some iced herbal teas. My favorite is Rooibos, which tastes a lot like black tea but without the caffeine. Good luck!

  4. Try this - buy fruit juice (not the sugary junk) and put 2 to 4 ounces in a glass with 8 to 12 ounces of seltzer water. I like the pomegranate at Costco, and cranberry is good. When you add ice it makes a very refreshing sipper. You can make it more complex with a shot of tonic water - and a shot of vodka in the evening isn't bad either.
